What Is Myofacial Release?

Myofascial Release (MFR) is a gentle, safe, manual therapy technique that has a profound effect on the deep connective tissues (fascia) of the body. Chronic pain, limited motion, acute or chronic injury, inflammation in the body can be helped with MFR.

If youʼre struggling with chronic neck or back pain, headaches/migraines, TMJ  syndrome, tinnitus, sciatic pain,  fibromyalgia or other  autoimmune conditions, scar tissue restrictions, scoliosis, or generalized orthopedic pain symptoms then Myofascial Release just may be the missing link to finally finding relief!

What is the Spinal Flow Technique?

Founded by Dr. Carli Axford, a chiropractor with a profound understanding of the body’s natural healing mechanisms, is designed to release blockages in the spine, restoring the flow of energy and enhancing the body’s capacity to function optimally. It is a safe, gentle, holistic, and highly effective way to heal from pain, dis-ease, and illness by assisting people in moving from the zone of stress/ fight/ flight/ freeze (sympathetic nervous system) into the zone of healing/ rest/ digest (parasympathetic nervous system).

This is done by releasing stressors and blockages harbored in the body/ spine through a “spinal wave” which facilitates the rebalancing of the body and its function so that the body can self regulate and heal itself.

Conditions Treated

  • Arthritis
  • Headaches/Migraines
  • Scoliosis
  • Fibromyalgia and other autoimmune conditions

The John F. Barnes’ Myofascial Release (JFB MFR) approach is a safe and effective, hands-on, whole body approach to treatment targeting the cause of your symptoms. A variety of sustained pressures are applied to the fascial system, allowing the body to release restrictions, eliminate pain, and restore function.

“I first tried traditional physical therapy for my frozen shoulder.
Only when I tried myofascial release therapy did I experience noticeable improvement and pain relief.
Peggy’s experience and expertise helped immensely to improve my shoulder function and provide pain relief.
Her care and attention is greatly appreciated.”

Cathy M.

“Peggy is amazing at what she does! Somehow her hands intuitively know right where to go.
She knows exactly where to stretch & when to apply pressure.
I’ve never had a physical/ myofascial/ massage therapist as good as her.
I would recommend her to anyone.”
Shannon S.

“Peggy has helped me tremendously and in a fairly short amount of time. She cares about her clients and is very good at what she does. I have been seeing her for 5 years and am eternally grateful for all she has helped me with!”
Meghan M.

“Peggy is absolutely amazing at what she does. Just by touching certain areas of your body, she can basically tell you how your feeling before you need to tell her what is going on. Before seeing her for myofascial therapy, I would have such tight pain in my upper shoulders, neck and head. She’s taught me how to open up my chest so that I don’t have to deal with this pain. I also had issues where my legs would fall asleep and be so uncomfortable. She started working on my lower back, butt and legs and everything has gotten better. Being honest, my favorite part is how knowledgeable & kind Peggy is.”
Crystal S.

“Peggy is absolutely amazing! She has been such a blessing to have found while suffering from a back injury. I could not ask for a more caring, thorough, and knowledgeable therapist!”

About

Peggy began her career in traditional Physical Therapy where she has practiced for over 25 years in a variety of clinical settings including orthopedics, neurology, geriatrics, pediatrics, and management . Knowing her love and passion for the “hands on” aspect of P.T. and the therapeutic and healing benefits it provides, she began studying under the John F. Barnes Myofascial Release Approach in 2012 and has found this to be a missing link to most unresolved pain issues. Because of this, she has continued to enrich her knowledge base and skill set throughout the years. She pursued a license in Massage Therapy so that she could begin treating clients independently and solely in the area of hands on bodywork with an emphasis on Myofascial Release for unresolved pain issues. In addition to this, she performs a variety of therapeutic massage modalities including medical massage, deep tissue massage, sports massage, and Swedish/ relaxation massage. She also holds a Personal Trainer Certification through the National Council of Strength and Fitness since 2014.

What is Myofascial Release?

Myofascial Release (MFR) is a safe, gentle, yet very effective manual therapy technique used to alleviate pain and restore motion/ function in the body by targeting the cause of the symptoms/ dysfunction. Gentle, sustained pressure is applied into areas where the fascia (dense connective tissue) has tightened down or become “restricted” and held until a “release” or softening is achieved.

What is Fascia and how do restrictions form?

Fascia is a tough, dense, connective tissue that is found throughout the body running continuously from head to toe without interruption. The fascial system supports, protects, and envelops the muscles, bones, nerves, organs, and blood vessels – from the largest structures down to the cellular level. In addition, it plays an important role in the support of our bodies since it surrounds and attaches to all structures.

In the normal healthy state, fascia is relaxed and wavy in configuration and is bathed in a gelatinous matrix. It has the ability to stretch and move without restriction. Restrictions occur when trauma, surgery, poor postural habits, repetitive movement patterns, and inflammatory responses, cause the fascial system to solidify, tighten, and adhere. To compensate, tension and restrictions can then develop in other areas of the body as well.

How do these tissue changes cause pain?

As fascial restrictions occur, abnormal pressure is placed on the muscles, bones, nerves, organs, and vasculature. This can cause pain, swelling, and other undesirable symptoms. Because the fascia spreads without interruption, a restriction in one part of the body can create pain or dysfunction in another, even seemingly unrelated, part of the body.

Fascial restrictions can create a tensile strength of up to 2,000 pounds per square inch and do not show up on traditional diagnostic tests. No wonder people are often frustrated when their complaints of pain are not validated! In addition, medical, dental, or therapeutic interventions generally target the symptoms (rather than the cause) and often result in poor or temporary results.)

Is your goal to reduce/ or eliminate medications or avoid surgery?

  • Have you had negative diagnostic tests but still have persistent pain or dysfunction?
  • Do you desire to walk easier, run faster, work more efficiently, play harder, or sleep deeper or just feel better in general?

Myofascial Release just may just be the answer you’re looking for!

What is the Spinal Flow Technique?

Founded by Dr. Carli Axford, a chiropractor with a profound understanding of the body’s natural healing mechanisms, is designed to release blockages in the spine, restoring the flow of energy and enhancing the body’s capacity to function optimally. It is a safe, gentle, holistic, and highly effective way to heal from pain, dis-ease, and illness by assisting people in moving from the zone of stress / fight / flight / freeze (sympathetic nervous system) into the zone of healing / rest / digest (parasympathetic nervous system). This is done by releasing stressors and blockages harbored in the body / spine through a “spinal wave” which facilitates the rebalancing of the body and its function so that the body can self regulate and heal itself.

Our bodies hold signs and symptoms of the stress we’ve experienced. These stressors can be chemical, physical or emotional and continue to form in layers throughout our lives.
Spinal Flow Technique relieves people’s pain and dis-ease by connecting their nervous system to the brain to release spinal blockages and integrate their experiences.

The technique transforms people’s wellbeing by connecting them to what already works in their body and expanding that to allow the Spinal Wave to flow from the coccyx to the cranium.
Your practitioner will gently touch “access points” located along the spine which correlate to specific areas within the central nervous system. This will in turn open up the body’s self-healing responses by restoring optimal communication between the central nervous system and the body.

Benefits of the Spinal Flow Technique include but are not limited to:

  • Calming of the nervous system facilitating improved sense of relaxation
  • Improved / elimination of chronic pain, stiffness, and muscle spasms
  • Improved immune function and resilience towards illness
  • Regulation of breathing
  • Improved nutrient uptake and digestive function
  • Improved reproductive disfunction
  • Encouragement of tissue regeneration in brain and body.

The Spinal Flow Technique is fully accredited through the International Institute for Complementary Therapists (IICT).
